It was originally a disco-driven vehicle created by Soul Train booking agent Dick Griffey and show creator and producer Don Cornelius. They went on to be an influential dance trio, masterminded by Cornelius. As noted in the British Hit Singles & Albums, they were regarded as fashion icons and trendsetters, and helped to introduce "body-popping" to the United Kingdom. Their collective name, "Shalamar", was picked by Griffey.

Baccara was a Spanish female duo, a successful representative of 70s Eurodisco music. The two singers, Mayte Mateos (February 7 or March 7, 1951) and María Mendiola (April 4 or May 4, 1952) were originally dancers. Their first single, Yes Sir, I Can Boogie (1977), is now one of the evergreens in pop music. The relationship between María and Mayte deteriorated in the early 1980s. They first tried solo, then both singers chose a new partner, but they insisted on the name Baccara equally. The original Baccara is one of the most well-known Spanish bands in the world, although her records were made in the Germany, and the two singers achieved her greatest success abroad.

Love Minus 80 is a concept-driven collection of songs that were inspired by a number of science fiction/fantasy novels, films and television shows, many of which were published or released in the 1970s and 1980s.
